The Jackson Home, now more than 100 years old, is a unique time capsule documenting one of the most momentous movements in U.S. history: the Selma to Montgomery marches — a sustained effort to ensure that all Americans would have the civil rights and voting rights promised to them.

About

The Dr. Sullivan and Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson Home is a unique time capsule documenting the inspiring story of a courageous family and community at the forefront of one of the most momentous movements in U.S. history: the Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965.

Inside this home, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders made historic plans to ensure that all Americans would have the civil rights and voting rights promised to them. Their tireless efforts, spotlighted on national and world stages, would eventually lead to the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Relocated from Selma, Alabama, the Jackson Home will open in Greenfield Village in June 2026, becoming the first home to be added to the village in more than 40 years.

The Jackson Home and its contents are a remarkable fusion of the ordinary and the epic: A maple dining table — around which civil rights leaders, U.S. congressmen, and two Nobel Peace Prize winners broke bread and shared dreams. An upholstered armchair facing a black-and-white television — the chair where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. sat as he watched President Lyndon Johnson pledge to pass voting rights legislation.

Move to Greenfield Village

Originally from Selma, Alabama, The Henry Ford acquired the Dr. Sullivan and Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson Home in 2023. The Jacksons’ daughter, Jawana Jackson, asked The Henry Ford to acquire, relocate and elevate her historic childhood home, giving it an enduring home in Greenfield Village.
